MEMORIAL PARK "BUBANJ" – TARGET OF VANDALS
31.03.2010

On the occasion of "fascist slogans," in the area of the memorial park "Bubanj" and continuing the second phase of activity, "Clearing the terrain of Bubanj resort" including cultural and historical heritage preservation actions in 2010, Prof. dr Igor Novakovic, president of Palilula Municipality, held press conference in this memorial complex.

"The frequent target of vandals are monuments, tombstones and our residential and business objects. Graffiti with messages that promote racial hatred and incite racial discrimination, where the Nazis executed thousands of patriots, and the destruction of social structures, are only for mass public conviction. Just take a look at this amphitheater, which was reconstructed back for months and prepared for summer cultural events, now is completely demolished. Concrete seats are almost all broken. Enormous damage has been made here. We have strongly reacted on this matter`-president Novakovic said.

The municipality has filed criminal complaint against unknown persons who committed the damage and injury to this memorial area, and thus committed a violation of Article 354 and 387 (Criminal Code, ''''Official Gazette of RS 85/2005, 111/2009), propagating racial hatred and encouraging of racial discrimination. We sent a request Public Enterprise "Gorica" to immediately remove the "shameful messages from memorial ossuary. However, keeping and cleaning of Bubanj memorial complex is not included in regular activities of this public utility company.

According to Director of Public Enterprise "Gorica" Branislav Jezdimirović, it is necessary first to City Council adopt an appropriate decision and put this monument in the regular maintenance. Until then, "Gorica", available resources, in cooperation with Palilula Municipality go with preventive activities of area organization.

With the implementation of Palilula Municipal project "Clearing the ground for the establishment of trails on Bubanj resort" in 2009 with financial support from the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the City of Nis, the space of 38 acres has been fully moderated. The implementation of this project, through a program of public works and work engagement of vulnerable groups, socio-economic  status of the population has been improved, but also the ecological and sports and recreational offer has been also improved of Bubanj in relation to previous period.

Sustainability and continuation of the project in 2010 include new activities to preserve and secure this space. Palilula Municipality also in this year offered several projects to raise funds to continue planning activities Memorial park complex "Bubanj"
